Like a lot of encephalitis cases, there’s no clear answer to how I got encephalitis. I was diagnosed with herpes simplex encephalitis, which is the same virus that causes cold sores. I could’ve picked up the virus through tiny open cuts on my hands (I have eczema and very dry skin). It’s not clear how I got the virus.
But in certain rare circumstances, the herpes virus can “spread spontaneously to the brain, causing herpes encephalitis.” (Source: herpes.com)
I encourage you to do some research into the type of encephalitis you got, and explore ways in which you may have gotten it. It’s an essential first part of the recovery/grieving process.
